We have all been there. You spend a lot of time writing a blog post and put your heart and soul into it only to be greeted by the sound of crickets. A few stray views, perhaps a sympathy share from your mom, and that’s it. Frustrating, right? I myself have experienced this while writing a blog post, a post which I thought was one of my best. The response was rather lackluster in the beginning. But rather than feeling sorry for myself, I decided to experiment. And guess what? I was able to enhance its readership in just a single day. Here’s how I did it:
Diagnosis This means that you first have to find out what the problem is
First, I had to determine the cause of the problem with my blog post. I checked the analytics (Google Analytics is a great tool for this!). The numbers showed that the post had low page views, little time spent on the page, and a high bounce rate. It wasn’t just a question of numbers either – people who did click on the post weren’t sticking around for long. This pointed to problems with the headline, the first paragraph, or even the whole article’s ability to grab and keep readers’ attention.
Headline Surgery You Can’t Resist This
My original headline was; well, it was pretty boring. It was quite generic and lacked the punch that a good headline needs. I came up with a number of other options, focusing on making people curious, focusing on the benefits and using key terms. I used a headline analyzer tool (there are many available online) to get some analysis and finally settled on a new and better headline.
The Hook, Line, Sinker
How to Grab Your Audience from the First Word Itself. The first few paragraphs are very important. They have to capture the reader’s attention right from the beginning. My original opening was rather dull and formal. I tried to make it more informal, more approachable and interesting. I began with a short story which is related to the topic of the blog for speedyshort.com, making the reader interested right from the start.
Content Optimization
Enhancing Readability and Engagement. At first, I agreed with the main ideas but thought that the information could be delivered in a better way. I have divided the content into different paragraphs to help the reader absorb the information easily. I have also included more images, infographics, and even a video. Also, I have used bullet points and numbers to present some information in order to make it easier to find specific pieces of information. Finally, I ensured that the last word in the post had a clear call to action.
Promotion Blitz
Getting the Word Out There. The post had been optimized, and the next step was to promote it. I have posted it on all my social media platforms and made the post’s message suitable to the platform. I also participated in other online groups and forums and where appropriate, I have used the link and contributed to the discussions. I even contacted a few influencers in my niche and one of them was kind enough to share the post with his audience!
Engagement is Key: Responding and Interacting
As the views began to come in (and then stream in!), I took it upon myself to comment on my readers’ comments, answer their questions and thank people for sharing their thoughts. This created a sense of community and people were likely to want to engage further.
The Results:
These changes brought about a very noticeable impact. Within one day of the post being up, the page views of my blog post increased. Time on page was also twice as much, and the bounce rate was very low. More importantly, I got a lot of kind words from my readers, which was great.
Key Takeaways:
It doesn’t mean that your content is a failure: There is always room for improvement.
Examine and alter: Know what is doing well and what is not doing well.
Focus on the user experience: Make your content easy to read, engaging and beneficial to your audience.
Strategic Promotion: Use relevant platforms to share your content and interact with your audience.
This has shown me the importance of the continuous improvement and the strength of the small changes. It also reaffirmed the importance of knowing your audience and producing content that will actually resonate with them. So, if your best blog post is not getting the recognition it deserves, don’t lose heart. Use these tips, try them, and see the readership take off!
